First Lady Jane Pierce. The Pierces had three sons. One died in infancy. A second, Frank, died as a young child. After these two deaths, Pierce focused all of her attention on the remaining son, Benny. Just weeks before her husband’s inauguration, Pierce watched as eleven year old Benny was crushed and killed in a train derailment. She never recovered and spent much of her husband’s administration out of sight.
