P.B.S. Pinchback became the first African-American to govern a U.S. state serving as acting governor of this state.
Louisiana. In 1871, after the death of Oscar Dunn, Lieutenant Governor, the state senate appointed Pinchback to the post. The next year, impeachment proceedings were started against Governor Henry Clay Warmouth. Because of this, Pinchback became acting governor from December 9, 1872 to January 13, 1873.
