The Battle of Arnemuiden was the first recorded European naval battle where these were used.
Guns. Fought in 1338, a French fleet intercepted a five-ship squadron of English ships taking wool to Antwerp. The English Cog Christopher had three cannons and one hand-gun which it used to hold off the French for a full day before surrendering.
