In 1912, Captain Robert Scott of England and four others died in a failed attempt to be the first to reach this site.
South Pole. Scott and his companions did reach the pole in January 1912 but discovered that Roald Amundsen of Norway had beaten them there by a month having arrived on December 14, 1911. Scott and his team died of hunger and cold on the return trip.
