Army of the Potomac. Ironically, the Union Army of the Potomac – largest of the Union armies – was originally named the Army of Northern Virginia. The Confederate Army of Northern Virginia was formed in March 1862 by combining the Confederate Army of the Potomac with other armies in Virginia.
