In 1866 Christopher Latham Sholes patented this invention.

The can opener
The modern typewriter
The stapler
The modern typewriter. The idea of a typewriter dates to at least 1714, but Sholes’ "improvement in type-writing machines" consisted of a new layout of keys. The original Sholes layout was like a piano keyboard. However, that proved unworkable as the keys kept jamming. In the 1870s Sholes and his partner, Glidden, developed the now famous QWERTY keyboard to prevent jamming and increase typing speed.
