Charles XII of Sweden. After subduing Poland-Lithuania, he allied himself with Cossacks to build support for an invasion of Russia. After a severe defeat at the Battle of Poltava in 1709, he slipped away to the Ottoman Empire, a long-time enemy of Russia. There, Charles thought he could rebuild a force to invade Russia again, but his hosts soon grew tired of him and put him under house arrest.
