Douglas Fairbanks, Jr served as a Naval officer during WWII. Steinbeck was allowed to participate in raids with Fairbank’s Beach Jumper Unit in the Mediterranean. The unit conducted small-team diversionary amphibious assaults on German-held islands. Steinbeck often carried an automatic weapon on these raids and would have been executed as a combatant if caught by the Germans.
