Dogs. Specially trained dogs carried communications in tins hung around their necks, sometimes delivering up to 30 messages a day. Unlike carrier pigeons that required good flying weather, dogs could operate in any weather. They could jump barbed wire and find their way even in difficult terrain. During shelling, they‘d find shelter, then continue their mission after the firing died down.
