Stephen Foster. The often impecunious Foster sold E.P. Christy, leader of the popular Christy Minstrels, the right to put Christy’s name on "Old Folks at Home" for $500. Foster later tried to buy back the rights, but Christy refused and the song continued to be attributed to him until 1879.
