Mahatma Gandhi. Mahatma Gandhi was the organizer of the Non-cooperation Movement of 1920-’22, which sought to induce the British government to grant self-government to India. The movement grew from the Amritsar massacre of April 1919, when the British killed some 400 Indians. The movement marked the transition of Indian nationalism from a middle class to a mass movement.
