14-COTTON GIN.JPG –This postwar cartoon from Harpers Weekly, circa 1867, depicted the South’s continuing dependence on cotton production and the racial hierarchy that continued to dominate Southern society. Note the juxtaposition of Black workers in rough clothing and wealthy White men in top hats. An interesting detail is that the cotton gin being used to prepare the fibers for production is a primitive hand-driven model.
