It was suddenly quiet on the morning of June 11. No gunfire, no sound of jets, the silence broken only by the call of Rangers encouraging people of Dong Xoai to leave their shelters. In addition to its regular civilians, the town was inhabited by 200-300 militiamen along with their wives and children. Despite the danger from snipers, civilians emerged from bunkers, from wooded areas and from shelters and hiding places. (AP Photo/Horst Faas)
