Lucas Vasquez de Alyson, a high official from Santo Domingo, in September 1526 founded San Miguel de Gualdape, the earliest colony in what is now the United States on Winyah Bay in what is now South Carolina. Disease, lack of food, and a slave revolt forced the Spaniards to abandon the colony after three months. (Legends of America)
