Straw Hat Worn During The 1966 March Against Fear

The March Against Fear demonstration during the period of the Civil Rights Movement in the USA, was a walk by African-American activist James Meredith from Memphis, Tennessee, to Jackson, Mississippi, a distance of 220 miles. The purpose was to counter the continuing racism in the Mississippi Delta despite the passage of federal civil rights legislation, and to encourage African Americans in the state to register to vote.
