Did Luftwaffe pilots flying bombing missions over Spain during the Spanish Civil War in 1937 in support of General Francisco Franco encounter the effects of what is now known as the Jet Stream?
John G. O’Connell, III

Dear Mr. O’Connell,
I have read no account by any airman, Spanish, Russian, Italian, German or other foreign volunteer mentioning any encounter with the jet stream. The jet stream occurs in the area of transition between the troposphere to the stratosphere, approximately 25,000 – 30,000 feet in altitude. For the most part, the available bomb sights did not encourage aircrews to fly any higher than they had to during the Spanish Civil War, in which aircraft, including bombers, played an essentially tactical role.
Sincerely,
