Rev. William King founded the Elgin settlement in Buxton, Ontario for this purpose.
A settlement for free African-Americans. King was a staunch abolitionist. While living in Louisiana, he inherited several slaves when his wife, child, and father-in-law died. He brought the slaves to Canada where they would be free. He established the Elgin Settlement and opened it to any African–Americans seeking freedom.
