Who has the most informative report on the Eisenhower – Montgomery conflict?

—Tom

? ? ?

Dear Tom,

Probably any biography of Dwight D. Eisenhower and Bernard L. Montgomery would have the details of the deterioration of relations between the generals from cordial to rancorous, but it is not treated as a subject in itself and how it is treated within the context of their careers is often influenced by the author’s prejudices. In recent years British are more willing to view Monty “warts and all” than Americans are inclined to do with Ike. A recent addition to Osprey’s “Command” series, No. 9, Bernard Montgomery by Tim Moreman, includes a reasonably balanced, no-excuses take on Montgomery’s relations with Eisenhower, as well as with other generals, British and American.

Sincerely,
