Women of the Michigan Soldiers’ Relief Association are pictured here tending to wounded soldiers at the association’s tent in White House Landing, Virginia. Pictured at far left, likely dressing a soldier’s injury, is Julia Wheelock, a 29-year old teacher from Michigan who was appointed a visiting agent of the association in September 1862. She would later publish her diary recounting the experience. For more about Wheelock and some of the curious particulars of this image, check out the Details department in the Winter 2023 issue of Civil War Times.
