A great piece of history but I am very surprised that there is no mention of Looney Tunes regarding the staying power of this particular quote. There are several cartoons, mostly during the 40's, when either Daffy Duck or Bugs Bunny said this line. Although, Daffy did change Gridley to Grisley a couple of times. I could be wrong but for people who are under 55 I think the Saturday morning Warner Brothers cartoons is where the statement was heard and gained popularity. In fact, a lot of us owe a bit of our historical prespective and understanding to these 7 minute masterpieces of animation.

What a fascinating piece of history. I live in Yorkshire England and wonder if Charles Gridley is a very distant relative of mine. ?

Kudos to writer Richard Harris for a thrilling depiction of the situation and the utterance. On a whim I must googled the famous words and found this fascinating account. I never knew history could be so interesting! Mr. Harris did a marvelous job of putting the reader into the live human story. Thanks so much!

The Olympia is docked at Penn's landing in Philadelphia, Pa. It is an amazing piece of history and needs everyone's help. She needs repair if she is to keep afloat. Standing on her bridge in the footprints of the Commordore is breathtaking. what a lesson in American history. The reasons for the war may be argued, but none can doubt the honor of those that fought it. She is not only famous for her action at Manila Bay, she was also given the honor of bringing back from France the "Unknown Soldier" after the World War. She has honored us, now is time to honor her. Please help save this incredible ship.
