Women Heroes of World War II

By Kathryn Atwood. 272 pp. Chicago Review Press, 2011. $19.95.

The 26 women in this well-written collection of short biographical essays faced off against the Nazis in one form or another as part of the Resistance. From rescuing and hiding Jews to industrial sabotage and courier work (a favorite slot for women; they seemed, at least at first, less suspicious to the Gestapo), they played vital but underappreciated roles. Ages 12 and up.

Phantoms in the Snow

By Kathleen Benner Duble. 240 pp. Scholastic, 2011. $17.99.

A pacifist 15-year-old winds up in Italy with the 10th Mountain Division in this far-fetched but engaging coming-of-age tale. Ages 12 and up.
