My father Leonard "Coopie" Tamsin was in D company-506 I'm sure they knew each other. He passed away 5 yrs ago. He said only about a dozen troopers of the original members survived the war. My family is from Branford Ct. Same thing- never wanted to talk about much.

Hi Roger,
My grandfather was with 506th of the 101st, D Co. He never talked about it except to mention it here and there. He joined up when he was 30, the cut off age, in the summer of 44. He was married and had 4 children when he signed on. They called him "Pops". We know he did recon work and was also dropped in behind enemy lines. I know he was among some of the first troops in the concentration camps, but what camps I don't know. I also know his platoon was up in the mountains flushing out German officers when the war ended, but their communications were down and didn't know the war had ended until 8 days later. I know he was on the last ship, and among the last troops to leave Europe. My grandmother left the Christmas tree up until he came home. I'm not sure how to find and follow his steps through the war. If you have any suggestions, please let me know. My mother is going to give me his scrap book which has some photos in it from France and other places. He signed up in Massachusetts. I don't know where he went for training. I'm going about this blindly so any suggestions would great. His name was Raymond Stephen Engheben. Thanks so much.

I am researching some photos allegedly taken from hitler's retreat by a soldier named John Ocker from New York State. I'm assuming he was with the 7th or the 3rd.
I would appreciate any info that would confirm his participation in the taking of the Kehlsteinhaus.
Many thanks.

A FOLLOW-UP TO REPLY 9 & 10. MY DAD & I DECIDED TO VISIT MY COUSIN JULES CHICOINE AT HIS RESIDENCE IN VT.IN THE EARLY '50'S. WE WERE SURPRISED TO SEE A FULL ROOM OF WAR SOUVENIRS, SUCH AS A LUGER, A RACK FULL OF RIFLES, GERMAN HELMET, FLAGS,HUNDREDS OF POSTCARS , BOXES FULL OF PHOTO'S HE TOOK AND WHAT I REMEMBER MOST OF ALL, WAS A LEATHER BOUND 8X11 ALBUM WITH 8X11 PICTURES OF THE SURRENDER OF FRANCE IN THE SAME RAIL CAR THAT FRANCE HAD ALSO SURRENDERED IN WORLD WAR 1. HITLER HAD THE RAILCAR DESTROYED LATER. MY DAD & I WERE THE ONLY ONES TO SEE THIS ALBUM, AND MY DAD DIED YEARS AGO ,AND SORRY TO SAY, MY COUSIN JULES LOST MOST OF HIS SOUVENIRS IN A FIRE LATER WHEN HIS CHILDREN WERE TOO YOUNG TO REMEMBER. I WROTE TO SEVERAL HITLER WAR COLLECTORS AND NO ONE BELIEVE'S MY STORY. SO I DECIDED TO WRITE IT DOWN AS A LEGACY TO MY CHILDREN .ROGER 4/15/2011 7:30 AM

During 1944-1945 , i was attending school in Maine and was 14 and 15 at that time. i was writing to my cousin Jules Chicoine who was a paratrooper with the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division .He spoke French. a very good photographer and could read.maps.and a compass also.He was assigned to work in the S2 military intellegence division. He was trained to be dropped behind the enemy lines and sabotage the enemy communications and report back to their superiors, he eventually worked his way thru France, Holland, missed Bastogne , because of a shoulder injury. He rejoined his Company on their way to capture Hitler.s hide-a way in Berchtesgaden Austria. On their way there, near the town of Buchloe, they came across a Concentration camp. The Paratroopers were horrified by what they saw, and my cousin, being the photographer he was, took many pictures .In fact, many if his Photos appeared in the "Band of Brother's book , movie & Life Magazine.I have copies of the originals in my possesion, given to me by his son. Eventully, they made their way to Berchtesgaden and i also have copies of my cousin Jules with a Maitre'd white lacket, sleepin room and relaxing on Hitler's lawn. And the most important souvenir of all, my cousin Jules wrote me a letter written on Hitler's personnal writing paper taken off his tea room with the hedding in German" COMMANDER AND CHIEF OF ALL THE GERMAN ARMIES' The letter has been appraised ,and is authentic. I have displayed it in many military events. 04/15/2011 at 11 am

My dad served in WW2 and ended up in Bertchesgaden. He rarely talked about the war and after his death I discovered photos of him at the Eagles Nest. After questioning some relatives I found out that he was there during the occupation as a 2nd Lt.and he was involved in the resettling of German refugees back into the area and setting up services such as electric and water. I still don't know what division he fought with but I know he served in France, Holland, Belgium and Germany. Your article was excellent and I enjoyed reading about the taking of the Eagles Nest. Someday I hope to find out if my dad was there for the initial siezure or not.

I am thankful for this article. I have been told by my grandfather that he was the guys that had gotten to the eagles nest first. He even had a magazine that pictured him on the front cover sitting in front of the easgles nest. It was only as a young man that I noticed that the picture mentioned other mens name in the place of my grandfathers. I am even more dishearted now that I see that it may have been intentional. He never really talked about it that much it seemed that he was a proud to have served but not boastful of his accomplishments. It was only after he died, did we learn of the medals he was awarded. He was a great man and I am very proud of him and even more aware of the place in history he had serving with the cotton balers. The irony of this name the cotton balers is that he had made the comment, that one day he was working in a cotton field and the next day he was in a major war.

My grandfathers name was RD JOLLEY and he is the man in the picture on page 3. He is the only soldier pictured without a helmet, and the magazine cover is YANK magazine.

I miss you papa..
