My father Henry C. Phillips 813th TD recon, from NC, 1917-1997, was a guard at Fischhorn Castle. He observed the aftermath or perhaps the exact event of Helen bouhler's s suicide. She jumped from a high window and lay "crumpled and broken." Henry observed a young lieutenant removing diamond rings from her hands. I always wondered what happened to these pieces of tainted jewelry. Henry and his buddies would choose a bottle of wine each night to stand watch. My father remarked about the art and the rugs, etc. I wish I had asked him more.

My wifes Grandfather just passed away and we had his funeral he was Alvin Meyer who also partaked in the surrender of Goering. I would like to know more about this book that is being published. He was a tank driver in the 636.

Les Leggett was my step-father. I remember him recounting his memories of the war often as I grew up. Sadly, he died in 2008. A few weeks before his death he let me video him as he told his story of Goering's surrender at Fischhorn Castle at Zell am See for my son. His book is now in the process of being published.

My father Harry Lang was also with this Recon Platoon. Several years
ago in an email from Mark Gould he told me my dads name was one of the names on the back of this flag Probst is talking about. My dad talked
alot about the war, BUT as a kid i didn't pay attention...How i wish i would have. About 10 years ago Mr. Leggett sent me a hand drawn map of the travels of the 636 Tank Destroyer Bn routes from N.Africa
to Austria........My parents went to many of the 636 reunions in Nebr.
Any more information anyone might have would be appreciated.....

To: Pam Bona

Read your responses and would appreciated any more info you can give me.

I also have some questions about a gentleman named Mark Gould. He contacted my mother and requested a Nazi flag that my dad had, that was signed , and wanted to put it into a Museum somewhere in Texas.this flag was supposedly from the mission to capture Goering. He also had a website at one time called "The last mission". I can no longer contact this gentleman, and would really like to know where the flag is that my mother donated.

I'd appreciate any help or info. steve probst

Please see my comment, below. I cannot find any evidence online that "To Zell and Back" was published. What a shame! It was a tremendous undertaking and only needed editing and a publisher. Les elaborated on the fact that Goering had sent a message ahead to ask to be taken to General Eisenhower. He insisted that Goering did not surrender to anyone involved in meeting him and taking him to Fishhorn Castle and that he did not surrender and was not arrested there.

A few years ago, I was contacted by Les Leggett to help him edit a draft of his memoirs to submit to a publisher. He'd been working with a publisher who died, suddenly, and had to begin the process of finding a publisher all over again. He spent many hours with me, reviewing the history of talked at great length, I listened to him for several hours over several meetings during which he used his manuscript to guide me through the history of the 636th Tank Destroyer Battalion, 36th (Texas) Infantry Division, Seventh U.S. Army arrival in Europe from North Africa. He also took me to a lecture at the Texas Military Forces Museum, located on Camp Mabry in Austin. I have a draft of Les's Chapter 11, on the apprehension of Hermann Goering. He was adamant that many details had been omitted and/or misrepresented by other participants in this event. He wanted to "set the record straight." The interview here includes a portion of the information he wrote.

According to my dad, Frederick Miles, Goering was captured at SS Headquarters in Nuremberg. They blew the large Swastika off the top of the building to create a diversion before storming the building. Goering and some generals were eating when the Americans stormed the dining area and the generals tossed their jewelry into their soup. During the shoving one of the bowls was dropped and a mad scramble for the soup bowls and jewelry took place. Goering was apparently happy with the raid, possibly because he was already under arrest by the SS as stated in the article. My dad also didn't talk about WWII, just like I don't talk about Viet Nam.

My father was Hank Probst mentioned in the above article, I would appreciate anyone who has any other info to drop me an e-mail. Like many WW II vets, my dad didn't talk alot about his part in this mission. Most of what I have found out has been after his death 10 years ago.

thanks...........steve
