My father, Hugh F. Fitzgerald, was a duty officer the night the sabotuers landed on Long Island and as I recollect, received a
call from the coast guard station telling him about the noise of the engines and the suspicious behaviour of the strange men on the
beach including the large wad of cash that they were flashing around.
When my father called his superior to pass on the information, he said that the officer was asleep and had to be awaken. When on the phone
he kept questioning my father about the information saying that it was incredible and hard to believe giving my father the impression that he
didn't believe him and leaving my father with the impression that the superior officer was resistant to passing the information on right away. Always wondered whether that created any time delay allowing the saboteurs time to board the train?

My father Harry Cronmiller, was the "other guy" in this slice of history. He and John Cullen were both patrolling the beach that night but were not together when the encounter happened.

The next day, as my father put it, "all hell broke loose". All sorts of CG, Army and FBI converged on Amagansett. Among other points, the FBI was amazed that they were patrolling the beach with only flashlights. Dad says they pretty soon after got rifles, but never got any ammunition.

I have read this article several times with great interest because my family had a summer home right on the ocean in Amagansett. Our house was the closest house to where the saboteurs landed along the coast. In fact I have a picture of myself sitting in the hole where the saboteurs buried their clothing and the munition crates. Those things were retrieved when the hole was dug up.
It was quite a few months before the public knew about this act. But my aunt always told the story that she and a friend were out in the dunes digging up Dusty Miller. If you don't know, Dusty Miller is a plant. She wanted to replant it arould our cottage. While she was doing this, all of a sudden a Coast Guard person approached her and asked her what she was doing. She immediately said she was digging up Dusty Miller. He was not familiar with the name of the plant and he was not amused. I don't know whether that is true or not, but it sounds like a good story.
