My father landed on Peleliu on 15 September, and never talked much about it until I myself became a Marine back in the '80's. Then I couldn't get him to shut up. :)
He also begged me to read Bill Ross's book, as well as others by Sledge, Manchester, and Leckie. As a former combat arms Marine, I still can not fathom the terror of the Peleliu campaign and that day on the beach in particular.
The 15th of September is still a very solomn date at my fathers house, and years from now, after he's gone, I know it always will be at mine as well. God bless you all who were there, no need wondering what hell is like: Been there done that. Just think of heaven. You've earned it.

I was present aoard the USS Gunsto Hall (LSD-5) duringb the Peleliu operation and I consider it as the most horrific battle of the 9 that I participated in, including Iwo Jima. So many battle wounded on the 1st day and no place to recive and treat them, both phsical and mental wounded. We had to turn away many of the seriously wounded.
                                                  Respetfully, H.Andrews
