My Dad, Gerald W. Turk was a member of the 71st Reconnaissance Troop. I remember him telling me how they were searching for gasoline and how they had helped to liberate a concentration camp. My Dad died in May of 2009 and is buried at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, MO. His father and uncle were in the Navy at Pearl Harbor when it was bombed. My grandfather, was on the USS Ward, which fired on a Japanese mini-submarine before the attack started on Pearl. Many brave men from my family have served our country, including my brother who served in Vietnam and my son who served as a nuclear mechanic on a submarine. Happy Veteran's Day to all. God bless our vets!

Kay,
You must have the same letter I have. I only have a copy, though. Unfortunately, when I scanned it, page 2, got corrupted. I am trying to get a copy of the letter again. I would love to see the picture from the surrender.

This is great reading and the work is greatly appreciated, My father was a chaplain in the 71st and until his death 08/15/09 he remained proud of this fine group of men with whom he served. The Red Circle was a valiant fighting force and those of us with fathers who served in it are fortunate to have had them in our lives. Let us never forget, however, those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

I am totally fascinated with this article as it goes into some greater depth than the letter that I have, that was written by 1st Lt. Edward W. Samuell, Jr. My grandfather was one of the members of Samuell's reconnaissance platoon. I am so glad to finally see something in print on the internet about this event.
