For JOHN PERRY above:

Mr. Perry, I am writing my dissertation on American intelligence during World War I. I was wondering if you might be willing to share copies of what you found from your grandfather's service? Based on your comment above, it sounds like they might be quite useful to me.

I hope to hear from you!

I am named after my uncle James F. Carty, who died 1929, five years before I was born. He died from appendicitis because he did not like doctors nor trust them and so he and his wife Anna Horton Carty got professional aid much too late near Windham, NY in the Catskills.
I'd like to resume contact with the author of this article, but cannot produce his e-mail.
Can you help?

Interesting account. I was looking to learn more about the activities of Battalion Intelligence Sections during WWI. I just came into possesion of my Grandfather's papers, he was a Cpl. assigned to I.S. for 2nd Battn., 310th Inf, 78th Div. He never discussed the war and I only recently learned that between 10/20/18 and 11/02/18, casualties in his section totalled 12, 2 killed, 9 wounded or gassed, and 1 missing, so no wonder he preferred not to recall it. I thought he had only worked as a translator, but a war office letter in his papers asked him to describe the events of 10/22/18 on which several of his comrades were killed. It seems that "intellegence gathering" was more hands on than it is today. Does anybody know more about the size and organization of such intelligence units during the war?
