Good article. What is missing is only a guess, but one can imagine the hundreds of rapes and murders of civilians as these gringoes ravaged for whatever they needed especially as they were ill supplied. My guess is they were little more than a mass of savage criminals- far from having any honor whatsoever.

The name William Walker is still used to scare little kids in some countries of Central America.
He was both smart and tough to be able to takeover a country with a few gringos and some local indians. He was invited by one faction of a civil war to help them win and he did win!
He had an advantage the locals did not have. The Americans were armed with Colt pistols and rifles. The local conscripts were armed with flintlock muskets. The tactics were simple, the gringos would fire their rifles at th officers and close with a pair of pistols which fired most of the time, flinklocks misfired most of the time in damp climates.
Remember that Walker's distractors were on the payrol of Commandore Vanderbuilt and his money was what defeated Walker. I like the idea of an American adventurer doing so well.
I use the name William Walker as the main character in my books . WWR http://wwrutland.wordpress.com

A fancinating story that I knew little of until now. It is a good barometer of the prevailing attitudes of the time that he continued to be aquitted of a crime he continually committed. Thanks for bring this story to light.

Thanks for posting the article.

I wrote a paper about William Walker when I was at West Point in the 70's. They thought I was making the story up save for the endnotes. My great-great grandfather fought and was wounded in the battle of Rivas. He was a major in the Costa Rican army at the time of the war.

Excellent article! It constantly amazes me how like sheep we can be when excited by a charismatic leader. Give us some dream of glory and stroke our egos with flattery and we'll believe anything we hear regardless of the logic or feasibility of the message. Education and study of history, like this article, is our only defense against being swayed by caustic rhetoric spewed by so many who see themselves as great leaders. Thanks for sharing.
