Two things.

First, when the Native American's were sent to reservations and before massacres, the newspaper articles that came out talking about "violent uprisings" and "murdours heathens waiting for their chance" and the like. Many times, this wasn't true, but it gave the journalist a story and, in time, the Native american's their demise.

Second, the west itself. The rumors of a "wild and unruly land" with "death around every bend" and "unstopped violence breaking out in the street" that "chased peace lovers away." Some places may have been like that, but not all and certinaly not all the time.

The Walk-Down gunfight. As I understand it, most shootings weren't in the form of a fast-draw duel; but, rather, an ambush from behind.
