Was it common practice in the Old West for men to share a hotel room with strangers if overbooked, like in colonial times?

? ? ?

According to Wild West editor Greg Lalire, cowboys weren't all that shy about sharing the same bed if need be. They might stay with strangers if the rooms were overbooked…and with non-strangers just to save money.

Old West! In the early 1960's when my classmate from Lafayette college drove together to California to go to (different) grad schools it would not have occured to us to do anything else if there were a few bucks to be saved.

Yes and in those days we patted each other on the ass when we made an especially goid play also. And it did not mean a damned thing. Times have changed.
