The battle of Hydaspes is often considered one of Alexander's master pieces. However, he crossed the swollen river during a heavy storm, without sending scouts previously. He thought there was only one island to cross and it turned out that there were two islands, so his troops were exhausted and cold after performing 3 crossings. before the battle. Luckily for Alexander, Porus sent battle carts (which became stuck in the mud and a small number of troops, which were promptly defeated, weakening Porus' main army. Alexander was also very lucky to have Bactrian archer-cavalry (probably mongolian riders) which caused great devastation in Porus' cavalry and infantry, far more effective than the slow phalanx in a wide battle front.
