I was a young sailor onboard the USS TICONDEROGA when Admiral Stockdale was shot down. I remember when it happened. When Navy Pilots were shot down it saddended all of us. Admiral Stockdale was not only a Hero to all of his fellow POW's, he was a Hero to every Sailor in the U. S. Navy at his time and for today's and future sailors who will hopefully use the inspiration passed on by him in judging how they will react. I was deeply saddended when he passed away. A True Warrior.

Excellent article! As an enlisted man, then young Naval Officer, I proudly wore (then Commander) James Stockdale's POW bracelet. I didn't know who he was, at first. I later met Admiral Stockdale on the flight deck of the aircraft carrier USS Coral Sea (upon which I was stationed). It was a quiet Sunday morning and after the appropriate salute, I introduced myself and showed him the POW bracelet. Adm. Stockdale was very appreciative of my wearing the bracelet and for saying a few prayers along the way. We chatted for a few minutes. He impressed me as being a very bright yet unassuming individual. I still remember our encounter -- some 35 years later.
