[...] For the remainder of the war, the crew of the Porter would have to suffer the ribbing of other Navy ships, who on meeting would semaphore the message, “Don’t shoot! We’re Republicans!” [...]

My grandfather was a crew member, and it disturbed him for the rest of his life. But I'm a bit confused about the reports of the crew's fate posted on the Internet. Everything indicates everyone survived; my grandfather had a much different account. Anyone out there know what I'm talking about?

Thank you for your support fire in defense of DaNang AB, RVN during, if I remember correctly, 1969. Those 16" rounds seemingly feet above our heads as you fired in response to incoming rockets were loud but very reassuring. Thanks again.

The Iowa (BB61) Class Battleship, of which there were only 4. The ships had three, 3 /16" gun turrets.
I served in Viet Nam on the USS New Jersey (BB-62) the second ship of the Iowa Class. The other two were, the Missouri (BB-63) and Wisconsin (BB64)

Paul,
You can be sure it was anything but "funny" to the men on scene. Let me assure you of the abject terror of looking down the bore of an 18" naval gun bent on blowing you into crab bait.

This is Commander M.G." Rick" Emrick U.S. Navy retired. At the time of this near tragedy I was in Patrol Squadron 15 operating out of Bermuda. Our squadron of four-engine patrol aircraft (PB2Y's) had the mission of providing anti-submarine protection for all ships within operating range of Bermuda. Our aircraft provided this coverage for the battleship that President Roosevelt was on board and the three destroyers. We did not know at the time who was on board the battleship. Years later I read the date that this live torpedo was fired. When I checked my official navy flight record, it showed that my aircraft was covering these ships on that exact date. I was first pilot at the time.
