Also there were times that the 16 inch guns would fire at an Island and if I was not on duty I would stand about 30 feet or so on the main deck and watch as you can see the projectiles travel along for a few seconds and then they would disappear. But I never knew that this would effect my hearing and I am sure it did as my hearing asks for repeats a lot.!!! Now the Missouri has been reconditioned for missile wars and I am one of the few that still lives. But yes those 5 inch guns were very difficult to tolerate.
