This is a amazingly complete and enlightening article on the woes of our brave Submariners due to the faulty design of the Mark 14 torp. Thanks very much for your efforts. I do have a question:

Has anyone ever read a book which claimed that a Japanese saboteur was involved in the design of the contact exploder and that is why they were unreliable? Seems to me I read that many years ago and I don't remember the books title.

Indeed the design of this device certainly had more problems that the contact pistol. Just trying to separate fact from what at this point seems to have been a contrived excuse. Not looking to start a "conspiracy theory" either.

shouldnt have "went to war" hmmmm shoulda wioulda coulda..

never occurred to you that then and now,,bad people exist who'd laugh at anyone suggesting talk aas an alternative.

Ask the Japnaese people AFTER NAGASAKI and Im sure youd have had a different opinion.

They were an arrogant racist nation who beleived in all thier hype and peopoganda concerning thier superiority over the US and esp over other Asians>>

talk??? read your history about the naivite of such a suggestion. They were talking with us_ambassador Kurusu-for months while they planned the Pearl Harbor attack

they regarded us with scorn, thought we were soft and would never defend another asian nation.

Only after we kicked the crap out of them and nearly annilated their nation did it occur to them that they had no business attacking us in the first placeand had zero, I repeat zero chancwe of winning a long war..

tyhey were delusional...so is the notion of talk with wild animals

And also Wahoo, if the speculations Richard O'Kane made in his book "Wahoo", based on the fact that Wahoo carried the same Mark 18 electric torpedos that had circular run issues that sank the Tang.

A very well researched and written article that sheds even more light on the U.S. Navy's torpedo failures in WWII. Well Done!
