June 28, 2014, marks the 100th anniversary of the day a Serbian nationalist assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife, Sophie Chotek von Chotkowa und Wognin, in Sarajevo. Those two deaths and Europe’s climate of political maneuvering and alliances led to the deaths of millions. In 2013, Military History magazine printed an excerpt from Christopher Clark’s book The Sleepwalkers, How Europe Went to War in 1914.
