Truman Smith retired as a colonel. He was in poor health during his latest years of service but was kept on tap even though he was undergoing dialysis.

An excellent and reliable article. Andrew Nagorski has summarized Truman Smith's career with great skill and come to an honest and reputable conclusion. His book is highly readable and important. Worth mentioning is that some of Smith's German friends in the old Prussian officer corps were destroyed by Hitler, and others tried to kill Hitler. Smith's sources were also excellent. Drew Pearson, the columnist who tried to destroy Truman Smith, was described by FDR as "my hatchet man" because he gave Pearson's failed father a safe government job. Pearson later lied and destroyed James Forrestal, whp was a strong anti-Communist. Any pattern emerging here?
