I thoroughly enjoyed listening to you on the John Batchelor Show which propelled me to buy your book Nomanhan. I am a long time traveler and was always interested in going to Mongolia but didn't know of the battle of Nomanhan. Now that I know I want to incorporate a trip to the battle field in my itinerary.

I am thinking of flying from Beijing to Hailaer, China hiring a driver and car and then driving to the battle lines the Japanese held and also seeing the caves built by the Japanese during the Manchurian conflict. I would then fly to Choibalsan and duplicate your route to the battle field. I don't know if I can cross the border from China to Mongolia to get to the battle area of Nomanhan. I am also afraid with limited time that I will have to choose the west approach from China or the east from Mongolia.
I was hoping you would be able to shed some light on my travel interests.

I agree. This helped put Japan on the road to Pearl Harbor... instead of joining Germany in finishing off the Soviet Union in late 1941. That's the conclusion in my 2009 article in this magazine (http://www.historynet.com/mongolia-1939-stalins-shrewd-opening-act.htm), a thesis that I develop more fully in my recently published book: NOMONHAN, 1939: The Red Army's Victory That Shaped World War II (Naval Institute Press, Annapolis, MD, April 2012, 228 pp.).
