Union soldiers, civilian workers and contrabands made the U.S. Capital the world’s most heavily fortified city during the conflict. Most of the forts and other military installations were quickly dismantled after the fighting came to an end, and much of the land was sold off to private developers. But some building and neighborhoods associated with wartime incidents and notables can still be seen today. After exploring traditional tourist destinations such as Ford’s Theater and President Lincoln’s Cottage, take time to visit some of these lesser-known sites.
