So the Brits ran a classic intelligence operation, and the Nazis fell into it? Hooray for the Brits. Pretty much any officer above the rank of major has dabbled in military intel, and ought to know better than to run their mouth where the enemy can hear. Certainly, any one of star rank has been schooled in intel ops. If the Nazis were so stupidly arrogant they fell for it, it was actually a good thing for this world.

In view of what we learned then (and subsequently) of these "Senior Officers", and THEIR treatment of POW's, neither we, nor anyone else, had any reason to feel somehow "ungentlemanly" in our treatment of these "Officers". None of them were starved, beaten, or, for that matter, sent somewhere to be either gassed or worked to death. If I may, for a moment, be crude: They might find "sympathy" in the dictionary...between "s**t" and "syphilis".

And Luke nails it, as well. Why worry about how people treat their enemies? They treat their friends badly enough.

Patrick--good point. They clearly did NOT expect it--another sign of the privileged position of the German officer corps. And Dave, excellent point I hadn't thought of. MG and above--hard to imagine losing all your power and influence. Thanks, guys.

Given that I was a high ranking officer Colonel or above I would think that my conversations were monitored. However some ranking officers Malor General and above may delude themselves that because of their higher rank no one would dare to listen in on their conversations.

Remeber the old saying, "alls fair in love and war". There was no torture, coersion and no threats of physical volence. Planting microphones all over a pow camp for staff officers is not a ethical bad thing and should have been expected by the officers that were there.

Who said you had to play fair with your friends Bill? You guys are going to give me a bunch of crap for what I am about to say.

At Casablanca Ira Eaker convinced to the CCS to relinquish command of the Combined Bomber Offensive (CBO) to Portal. He argued Portal let each air force commander choose their own targets. By doing this he built an insurance policy into the early proposed CBO. This insured the Americans could do daylight bombing. He also got Churchill drunk and quoted him in a letter to Arnold requesting more bombers. There was no mention of Churchill's drinking in the letter.

Arthur Harris was more crafty. Eaker wrote and got the JCS and CCS to approve POINTBLANK. Harris sensing that this plan would compel him to attack American planned objectives made some edits to the plan. According to his side POINTBLANK was an American plan and the British were under no obligation to follow it. However, he did agree to the POINTBLANK Directive after he made some timely changes and inserts insuring he would be able to deviate from the objectives that the original plan laid out. He did this days before the plan became operational.

We could also look at what happened in 1940 with the Germans. Does anybody think it was a coincidence that Manstein got an audience with Hitler and that his proposed plan switched the main effort from von Bock to von Rundstedt?
