I was brought up in the mining village of Ynysybwl, less than 10 miles from Senghenydd. Many years ago an old miner told me of working underground in the 50s in a pit in the next valley to the place where the disaster took place. They were drilling holes for shot-firing. When they removed the drill water began to pour in great force through the hole they had made. It was two weeks before the water stopped.

When they broke through they found the bones of some men and boys who had not been recovered together with their tools and food tins.

Here is a link to archive footage

Senghenydd 1913
Coal wet black
With blood and dirt
Weeping women
In ancient rain
Grief quenched rage
Grey flickering
Smoulders in
The eyes of children

We must all somehow keep the lamps of our history lit for future generations. I live in a small 'old' mining town in WV - called Monongah...where in December 6, 1907 we had a similar tragedy.
