<description>I&#039;m a direct descendent of Samuel G. Dodds. This is a recent discovery. I could trace my lineage back to a David O. Dodds born in 1859 in Richland County, Illinois and was found in the house of Samuel G. Dodds and wife Elizabeth Keyes. In 1870, the census reflects Elizabeth Dodds is married to a William Snyder and her son David Dodds is living in the household. I have never been able to verify or learn anything about his father Samuel G Dodds although I found record of Samuel on the roll of the 98th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. It wasn&#039;t until I discovered the Illinois state census of 1865 that I found Elizabeth living alone with 3 children under the age of 10. Apparently Samuel enlisted in mid-August of 1862 and mustered in about 2 weeks later. He left behund a wife and 5 boys, the fourth of whom was David O. Elizabeth was either still pregnant or had just delivered the 5th child when he enlisted and went to fight. The Illinois Civil War Detail Report lists him as having died SEP 21, 1863 AT CHATTANOOGA TENN OF WOUNDS. I presume he was either wounded in the Battle of Chickamauga and died shortly thereafter, or was wounded in the fighting at Chattanooga over the next day or so. I&#039;d love to learn anything more about these men (98th Ill especially - but I would assume they were all very similar). Any further information is greatly appreciated. I can be reached at superdodds@gmail.com

Thanks.
