would like to have the opportunity to talk with you about how much the work
of your uncle Arthur has meant to me, both intellectually and perhaps spiritually as well. I am a native of North County, born and raised and lifelong resident. I am of Mexican lineage and was one of the original committee folk who saw the San Pascual Battlefirld State Historic Park
grow from an idea into a part of our State Park system. Along the way I became a friend of Guy Woodward and enjoyed many, many long conversations . Guy and I drove to countless locations and I was richly rewarded in his friendship and knowledge. Lances at San Pascual has
always been the standard by which I measure other authors writings
regarding Californias history. As a boy in public schools there was
never a single instance of a Mexican adult male depicted as an honest,
or heroic character...only bandits or similar sinister types...not very comforting for a young mind and tender heart. No Davey Crockets,
no Jeffersons, no Roy Rogers on wonder horses.

The same theme seemed to repeat the same old stuff even at Graduate
level courses at U.C.S.D. The day I found Lances I never took my eyes off the text...the honest and scholarly unbiased history was a joyfor me that
has not and will not wear away over time. If you are ever in Escondido
I own one of the most beautiful restaurants in North America, please join me for lunch one of these days so you can judge for yourself. It is the oldest adobe in Escondido, once a private residence, there are nearly two acres of beautiful gardens and we have bougainvillas that are nearly 90
years old...that is difficult to fake even today. Please feel free to contact me at your convenience at the following :

RE: My uncle: noted historian Arthur Woodward. Do you have any more articles written by him? I am director of the Ramona Pioneer Historical Society and am in the process of collecting his writings. He passed on, I believe, in 1981.
