It is a similar situation to Graff Spee, that also was scuttled on December 1939 at the River Plate. Differente sources comfirm that Adolf did not wish to allow a German Man of War be captured by the British. The message sent to Lutjens before the final battle follows this line of thought-

Either way, the Royal Navy destroyed the Bismarck, either by sinking it by Dorsetshire´s torpedoes or by compelling them to scuttle the ship. Can you imagine the propaganda of the "Bismarck" being captured by the British! My respects to both the British and the German sailors who rendered their life in this action.

You may perhaps want to watch a Discovery video (2002): James Cameron's Expedition: BISMARK. In this documentary, James Cameron sends a couple of robots from his mini-sub three miles deep in the Atlantic to get a close up of The Bismark. I am of great British descent; a direct descendant of John Adams. I just wanted the truth. They found very compelling evidence that the ship Bismark was in fact, scuttled. Think of this: The cowardly Germans committed suicide, rather than to face certain destruction in defeat. They were COWARDS! They broke the law by building this monster and displayed their true yellow cowardly colors at the end. God save the Queen and God Bless America.

That's exactly what that statement is...a rumour. A rumour that will never be confirmed. We must give the boys of the Royal Navy credit for her sinking, as this was a very low point in the war for the British nation. A few German sailors who survived the sinking started that rumour, but does it really matter? The Bizmarck had just sunk the pride of the Royal Navy, HMS Hood. The Bizmark was sunk by the Brits! End of!

there was a rumour that the Bismarck actually scuttled the ship after recieving so much damage to the superstructure and it wasn't Dorsetshires Torpedoes that finally sunk her. (not that i am taking credit away from HMS Dorsetshire for a job well done) can anyone shead any light on this? is it fact or fiction?
