Maine isn't even close to number one. It's number NINE. Alaska has more coastline (6,640 miles) than all the other coastal states COMBINED. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._states_by_coastline) As for shoreline, Maine does have 3,478 miles of it, however shoreline and coastline are completely different measurements. The magazine clearly states that Maine has "3,478 miles of coastline, the longest of any state." Perhaps they meant to say "shoreline," but even then, Alaska still wins with 33,904 miles of it. Michigan is second, and Maine wins the bronze. (http://www.gsmmaine.org/abstracts.html)
At any rate, it is disappointing to see an educational magazine "educating" us with false facts.

"Why you should know more about MAINE" states that Maine's 3478 miles of coastline is the longest of any state. Maybe, in the contiguous states, but Alaska has 6,640 miles, point to point; including islands Alaska has 33,904 miles of shoreline. Estimated tidal shoreline, including islands, inlets and shoreline to head of tidewater is 47,300 miles. (FACTS ABOUT ALASKA, The Alaska Almanac -15th Edition. Alaska Northwest Books.) Don't know about Hawaii.
