How might I find a list of the Union troups who might have been on board the Pauline Carroll or the Henry Ames, or possibly another at the time of the Sultana disaster? My great-grandfather, Manuel C. English, survived Andersonville prison and made it back to southern Illinois. I would like to know how he got there (back home). I don't think he was on the Sultana. Haven't seen anything to lead me to believe that he was.

My g-g-grandfather was drowned on the Mississippi River during the time of the Sultana disaster and was wondering if there was a passenger list for the civilians that were aboard the steamer. As a family we are at a loss as to where his body is buried & if we had some idea if he was aboard the Sultana when it went down, maybe we could put some finality to his death.

As I try to uncover information about my ancestors, rumor was that my great grandfather, Captain William Doak Shanks was one of the investor/owners of the Sultana, and that we was to captain it on that faiteful day.
Do you know of a source where I can check this information?

thanks

Anyone interested in the Sultana should check out a new website devoted to the disaster, www.sultanadisaster.com.
