I grew up in R.I. and this is the first I have heard this story about these men. What a story of courage and love for country. The letter that was written by Sullivan brought me to tears How beautiful!

My grandson's first name is Sullivan, he was named after Sullivan Ballou. My son-in-law loves stories about the Civil War and was so impressed with Mr. Ballou's story that when his son was born he decided he would be honered to call him Sullivan. Sullivan is now 14yrs old.

[...] The Providence Public Library was given the Society’s books and manuscripts in 1915, and in turn apparently gave the manuscripts to the Rhode Island Historical Society in 1933. This box obviously never made it across town, and now we have some treasures to preserve.
My great grandfather, John Sanders was wounded in the Civil War and we have hand written letters he wrote from the hospital. Of course we have some pictures of him as an eighteen-year-old in his uniform. Snappy looking guy!
