I thought this article on this very important early US battle was well ordered and very informative. I have done some research on this battle primarily because my fourth ancestral grandfather, William Pence from Augusta county Virginia fought in this battle. His father, also William, fougth in the Revolution and stayed on in the Continental army until 1788. I have always wondered why he located initially to New Orleans with his family and then to my hometown of Baton Rouge around 1813 where he bought a lot and in later years a small plantation in the Clinton area, 30 miles from Baton Rouge. I do not know if it was because of Louisiana statehood in 1812 to settle or General Taylor's recruiting after reading this article. I am sure he knew many of the Virginia leaders from Revolutionary War fame like Philomen Thomas and Fulwar Skipwith who settled in Baton Rouge along with Zackary Taylor,as well as well as other plantation owners in Baton rouge area.

I have been trying to find his placement at this Battle site, but, have not had enough time to dedicate a day of research. After reading this article, I gather he may have been one of the Louisiana rifleman at the redoubt. My brother tells me his contingent was also probably on the midnight raid on the British. Presently,I live in Tennessee but I went back to louisiana during the April 2010 oil spill. I took a trip down to the Challmette battle site that i haven't visited since a boy with my father, and it is still preserved very well, although; some records and articles were misplaced during Katrina. The ruins of the plantation home Jackson had destroyed because it obstructed his overlook of the British is still in the middle of a 4 lane blvd, and like the Alamo, I think, original cannon.

Although the Chesapeake prong of the British offensive initially succeeded in Bladensburg and DC, it is imprudent and inaccurate to entirley omit the fact that the British offensive was entirely repulsed at Baltimore. In fact, the battle of Baltimore in effect ended the war before the first shots were fired in New Orleans, unbeknown to those fighting in NO. Further, it is quite possible that the British humiliation at Baltimore caused them to throw caution to the wind and imprudently attack the entrenched Americans at New Orleans.
I know the aim of the story is to show the importance and excitement of the Battle of NO, but it is historically improper to omit reference to the related and strategically more important battle of Baltimore (perhaps because it has a lower body count?)!
