Too many people know so little about the American Revolution. This first American Civil War pitted Americans against Americans as much as between British, French and other mercenaries (Polish, Swedish, Hessian). I believe a peaceful settlement was hoped for by everyone until the French landed at Newport, Rhode Island, in 1777. At this point every New Englander whose family had fought against the French for 150 years sided with the British. Every major Loyalist regiment was founded or commissioned in 1777. At Savannah, DeLancy's First Battalion (Long Island, NY) held the Spring Hill Redoubt. Maitland's 71st Highlanders were mostly veterans and descendants of General Wolfe's Frazier Highlanders from Quebec. The King's American Regiment and other Loyalist regiments went on to take Charleston, Ninety Six, Hobkirk's Hill, and Camden, SC. As a relative of Major Joseph Green (DeLancey's 1st) and Sgt-major James Caleb Green (KAR), I can verify that these men, who never lost a battle, had their lands and property confiscated and started over again in Nova Scotia.
When the second American Civil War found Savannah it was another Green, a British subject, who rode out and requested Gen. Sherman leave the city intact. It is almost 234 years since these battles and huge loss of life and property. Let us hope we never forget the efforts of those to preserve Savannah, no matter what their cause.

What ever happened to all that Revolutionary War archaeology being done in Savannah? What did archaeologists discover? How can people who live, work, and play in Savannah and Chatham County become involved with archaeological sites? Can preserving sites help the area's economy and quality of life? Come to an archaeology presentation and public meeting Feb. 1, 2011 to find out and to offer suggestions. Coastal Heritage Society will reveal Revolutionary War discoveries in Savannah stemming from the two “Savannah Under Fire” projects conducted from 2007-2011. The projects uncovered startling discoveries, including trenches, fortifications, and battle debris. The research also showed that residents and tourists are interested in these sites. Archaeologists will describe the findings and explore ways to generate economic income and increase the quality of life of area residents. Following the presentation the public will be invited to offer comments and suggestions about such resources. Don't miss this rare opportunity to provide input. The meeting is sponsored by the Coastal Heritage Society, through a grant from the National Park Service, American Battlefield Protection Program. It is free and open to the public. Time: 6-7 p.m. Location: Savannah History Museum auditorium, 303 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd, Savannah, Georgia (same building as the Visitors' Center on MLK). Date: Feb. 1, 2011. Thanks!! for more info: ritatelliott@gmail.com
