I myself is a Marine NCO attending Sergeant's Course in Camp Lejeune, NC, and I have to write a paper on a Marine NCO that was influential in the Vietnam War. When I read this article there is no doubt in my mind that Sergeant Gonzalez is the one that I will be writing about. This is a great His-story and it purely motivated me as a sergeant myself to read the act of unselfishness of sergeant Gonzalez. Thank you

The sermon at my ch urch, St. Michael's Episcopal was devoted to Freddy Gonzalez by our priest, the Ref Sharon Alexander, who hails from his hometown of Edinburgh, Texas, and recalls his funeral there. There was not a dry eye in church. It was Vetwran's Day, Nov. 11,2012 and the church was already full of Vwterans Wreaths made by the Parishioners, as we do every year. I had nevwr heard ofFreddyGonzalez, but have decided to make one more wreath, for him,and after taking it to the Church for a prayer, I will be taking it, with the others. It willbe going to the USMC memorial at City Hall in Mandeville, LouisianaThis article as very moving. there was not a dry eye in Cxhurxh yesterday.

I have a privilege and honor to have served with Sergeant Freddy Gonzales at Camp Lejunne N.C. in the early months of 1967 before both him and I signed wavers to be sent to Vietnam. He for his second tour and me for my first. I have a picture of him and I standing side by side just days before we shipped out. What an honor. God bless him and his wonderful mom which I got to meet.

This Sergeant is the epitome of a Marine NCO. His leadership and personal examples of selflessness are the traits every NCO seeks to attain. His dedication not only to his duties, but to his junior Marines is what makes the Marine Corps the best fighting institution in the world.

I am currently attending the Sergeants Course on Camp Pendleton, CA and have to write an essay on one Marine NCO from this time period. I have chosen this Marine to write about. Is there any other information maybe you could share via email for me to reference?

Thank you in advance for your time and this wonderfully written piece on a true American Hero.

To Enrique Gonzalez: I wrote the book about Sgt. Gonzalez, and that article. Freddy would be honored, or wherever he is now he is certainly honored, that you got the tattoo in his name. The portrait. That says a lot about who you are and what you value.
Too bad the Marine Corps did not take you. But at least you can live the way he would have, given the chance. He was at heart a good man, caught in the fire storm of Vietnam. Had he lived, he'd have a wife and kids, and would be close to retirement as a football coach at his beloved Edinburg High School! That's what he wanted.
Thanks for your comment. I have a new book coming out on his life, his mother's life, and the warship named for him, titled: Fields of Honor, by Texas Tech University Press. It's scheduled for release next year. My email is: marinehawaii@gmail.com. Contact me and I will send a book to you next year.
